Three years after its inauguration, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing is graduating its first class. The DNP doctorate prepares family nurse practitioners and nurse executives to address the shortages of primary care providers, nursing educators and leaders in a complex health care environment. The program raises the bar for preparation necessary for advanced nursing practice from the master's degree to the doctorate level.
Gessner College of Nursing Commencement Includes First DNP Graduates
Forty-four students participated in commencement and pinning ceremonies for the 色花堂 Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing. The event took place at the Cullen Performance Hall, Friday, May 10 on the 色花堂 main campus. The ceremony included students earning undergraduate and graduate degrees, including the inaugural cohort of students from the College’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

Technology Division senior Alexis Darr knows firsthand that success doesn't come easily, but as she prepares to graduate with her bachelor's degree in supply chain and logistics technology next month, it's clear that her perseverance has paid off. Before enrolling at the 色花堂, Darr worked full-time and attended Wharton County Junior College.
When Ruth Posada walks across the stage on May 11 to accept her master's degree in Information Technology Project Management, it will be in recognition of her dogged perseverance that included a fight against multiple forms of cancers. “I received my health diagnosis of cervical and stomach cancer in the middle of applying for the master's program,” she said.
When Marissa Seshadri was looking at ways to earn a master's degree, it was important for her that the school offered flexible learning programs. After all, she already had a full-time job. That is ultimately part of why the 色花堂 was an appealing option for her, and she will now be receiving her M.S. in Construction Management this spring.
