In the future, electricity should indeed be a first choice, including either for direct use or via storage in batteries at greater than 90% efficiency with no carbon dioxide emissions. However, batteries can store only less 1/10th to 1/100th of the energy of molecular fuels like hydrogen, or bio- and synthetic replacements for gasoline or diesel.  

So, while we can electrify up to 60% of our energy needs, some applications—like building bridges, launching jumbo jets, or powering cargo ships—will still require high-energy density molecular fuels. While direct electrification will be a major part of our future, molecular fuels will also have an essential role to play.
