José F. Hernández Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

WCL has a new scholarship, the José F. Hernández Memorial Scholarship. It is open only to WCL Majors and Minors enrolled in at least 12 semester hours who have attended É«»¨Ìà the present academic year (2021-2022) and plan to attend the following academic year (2022-2023). 

Students applying need to submit by March 30, 2022

José F. Hernández  (1923-2017) owned a business in Fort Bend County for over fifty years. He was a staunch advocate for the civil rights of Mexican-Americans, and was the first person of color to integrate the city of Rosenberg, which he did in 1956. 

He was born in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, migrating to the United States with his parents when he was six months old. He served in the Philippines in World War II.
  

World Cultures and Literatures (WCL) Internship ($1000)

Each semester the World Cultures & Literatures Program (WCL) awards up to THREE scholarships supporting students to do internships at a cultural institution in Houston.
 
Scholarships will carry an award of $1000 to support a semester long internship during the Spring and Fall semesters.
 
Students can also earn 3- course credits by concurrently enrolling for WCL 4398 Independent Study. Course credits count for graduation hours, CLASS block or the WCL major.

Scholarships recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding skill in WCL coursework, as well as exemplary knowledge of and continued interest in matters related to language, literature, art and film. The goal of this scholarship is to support WCL students in exploring new careers and fields in cultural work as well as professional and civic leadership.

Eligibility requirements:

• Students will be able to apply for the internship if they have taken a WCL class or will take a WCL class in the semester they are carrying out the internship
• Overall minimum GPA of 2.0 and above
