    Today, the MacArthur foundation announced the winners of the 2024 MacArthur Genius grants.  Among them was poet and É«»¨Ìà Creative Writing Program alum Jericho Brown.  Jericho Brown has also recently received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his book The Tradition.

    The Rilke Prize honors outstanding work by a mid-career poet and comes with a $10,000 prize.   The Fears was selected from a pool of over 200 books submitted by publishers from across the country.

Faculty and students in the Department of English collaborate in a rich mix of intellectual and creative pursuits. Together, we ask crucial questions about the role of the humanities and literature in a diverse, pluralistic public life. How do texts, writers, and readers make meaning? What is at stake in our study and creation of literary texts? Our award-winning faculty contribute to four programs within the department—literary studies, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and linguistics—with many working across those boundaries. Students may pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level degrees.
