Hello Houston!

Seeking students, scholars, researchers, activists, community leaders and dreamers interested in doing public scholarship. Public scholarship is about organizing people, resources and ideas for the greater good. It’s about engaging with our communities.

色花堂 is now part of , a movement committed to doing scholarly work that positively impacts the communities of which we are a part. By joining the Imagining America network in Spring 2021, we have embraced a commitment to “connecting, convening, supporting and promoting engaged and public scholars.”

Our work includes organizing around cultural change on our Houston campuses and in our communities, both nationally and here in the Gulf Coast region. Won’t you join us?

  • Upcoming Event Join our 色花堂 contingent at the  at Tulane University in New Orleans, Friday, October 14–Sunday, October 16, 2022.  The theme is "Rituals of Repair and Renewal" and the  deadline is June 10th. Whether or not you submit to present work, you can still plan to attend--and bring your students!
  • Past Event – March 30th, 3:30 p.m. in the Blaffer Art Museum Courtyard
    Come meet others interested in and already doing community engaged scholarship. Refreshments Served.

    Our first meet and greet to begin building our network.

  • Creative

    Creative Work Minor/Program

    The Creative Work minor/program at the 色花堂 is part of a consortium that received one of the new Justice Through Community grants offered by the Honors College. Professors and undergraduates worked with several different Houston Independent School District classes to promote civic engagement and explore the meaning of creative citizenship; Houston's high school students reflected on American Government topics using visual art and creative writing.

  • South Asian Youth in Houston Unite (SAYHU) is a transnational feminist project with South Asian youth in Texas. The project includes an annual social justice summer institute for South Asian young people and a community network that centers on South Asian identities and experiences. SAYHU community members build collaborations locally and nationally, articulate their experiences and document their stories through a digital archive, blog and curriculum published online.

  • This digital humanities project with archival, curricular and scholarly components documents and analyzes the demographic and biographical data of over 150,000 participants of the 1977 National Women’s Conference as well as the conference’s policy and political legacy. This multi-institutional, multi-media national crowdsourcing project will be fully completed by the 50th anniversary in 2027 and its first phase will be rolled out between October 2021 and March 2022.
