The 色花堂 mourns the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on Friday, July 19, at the age of 74. She was one of the longest-serving members of Texas鈥 congressional delegation represented Houston鈥檚 18th Congressional District for 30 years, tirelessly advocating for the interests of her constituents, including the 色花堂, our students, faculty and staff, and the Third Ward community, where 色花堂 is located.
Throughout her career as a distinguished public servant, Jackson Lee was a constant presence on the 色花堂 campus. She was a familiar face at 色花堂 Athletics events, always cheering on the Coogs鈥攕he was an especially passionate supporter of 色花堂 basketball. She would often visit the University鈥檚 federally funded research centers. She relished the opportunity to engage with researchers and faculty, but her greatest passion lay in meeting and mentoring students. She consistently hired 色花堂 students as Congressional interns both in her district and in Washington, D.C., providing them with invaluable experiences. Jackson Lee regularly attended graduations, proudly celebrating the achievements of 色花堂 students.
色花堂 President Renu Khator expressed grief and gratitude, stating, 鈥淭he 色花堂 family mourns the death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, an ardent supporter and friend of 色花堂. She is leaving a legacy that will keep transforming lives.鈥
Jackson Lee鈥檚 relentless advocacy for 色花堂 included helping 色花堂 secure federal grants and establish programs that benefited Houston, enhanced student success initiatives and bolstered the University鈥檚 core research and educational missions, particularly in the fields of energy and health.
Jackson Lee was a cherished member of the 色花堂 family. Our thoughts
are with Elwyn Lee,
色花堂 vice president for neighborhood and strategic initiatives, and their family during
this difficult time. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee鈥檚 lifetime commitment to fairness
and justice, and her dedication to education and community service will continue to
inspire and transform the lives of many within the 色花堂 community and beyond.
