Jake Valentine, M.D., MEdHP
Jake Valentine, M.D., MEdHP, is the clerkship director for emergency medicine and a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. He also serves as the associate program director at the affiliated 色花堂/HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood emergency medicine residency program. Valentine is an expert in medical education with a focus on assessment and feedback, cognitive load theory, and knowledge organization strategies.
Valentine鈥檚 clinical interests include high-value care and incorporating Bayesian statistics into medical-decision-making. He has served on his hospital utilization committee and assisted with multiple Joint Commission and trauma accreditation surveys. Most recently, Valentine is developing a clinical decision pathway incorporating recent literature on high-sensitivity troponin values for emergency department patients with anginal symptoms.
He has over 20 peer-reviewed publications, including ones in each of the top three highest impact factor journals in emergency medicine. He believes emergency medicine is the quintessential rotation experience for medical students where trainees learn how to evaluate acute undifferentiated illness.
Valentine completed his undergraduate studies at Tufts University with dual degrees in biology and philosophy. He completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. Valentine completed his residency training in emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins, where he stayed for a master鈥檚 of education in health professions education. He was the recipient of the outstanding research award at his residency program for his work on problem representation and diagnostic accuracy by medical students on an objective structured clinical exam.
