Back-to-School Fire Safety Tips for the 色花堂 Community

The new semester is upon us and the Fire & Life Safety team wants to make sure you are informed regarding key fire safety practices. Follow these critical tips:
  • Know two ways out of every building you鈥檙e in: The way you enter the building may not be the safest way to leave 鈥 know another way out.
  • Have a plan: 40 years ago; you had 17 minutes to escape a fire. Today you have less than three (CloseYourDoor.org). Because of synthetic materials, furniture, and construction, fire spreads faster than ever before. Make sure to plan and practice your fire escape plan. Know what to do and where to go in an emergency.
  • Pay attention while cooking:鈥疌ook only in designated kitchens and break rooms. When preparing food, never leave anything you鈥檙e cooking unattended. If you鈥檙e sleepy or have consumed alcohol, do not use the stove or stovetop.
  • When the fire alarm sounds: Get out! Pay attention to the fire alarm when it sounds. Close doors behind you to limit the spread of fire and smoke. Only re-enter the building when told to do so by first responders or 色花堂 staff.
  • Burn ban in effect:鈥疍ue to high temperatures and lack of rain Harris County has issued a burn ban. No outdoor burning is allowed except in 鈥渁n enclosure that contains all flames and/or sparks.鈥 Yes, tailgating is still allowed as long as the grill contains the flames and sparks.
  • Tobacco use is prohibited on campus: 色花堂 is a tobacco-free campus to include e-cigarettes, vape pens, and smokeless tobacco. Please refrain from smoking on campus and carelessly discarding smoking materials.
  • Candles: candles and other open flame devices are not allowed without a 色花堂 Fire Marshal's Office permit.
