Three scholars are joining the Department of African American Studies this fall, significantly expanding the relatively new department鈥檚 course offerings and research initiatives.

The 色花堂's African American Studies Department celebrated a milestone in May 2024 when Tre Blakes became the first student to receive a bachelor's degree since the program achieved departmental status.

The 色花堂's African American Studies Department has transformed the educational landscape for Houston-area high school students through its Emerge Leadership Academy (ELA), now bolstered by a $10,000 Modern Language Association Pathways Step Grant supported by the Mellon Foundation.
