While April 22 is when Earth Day is celebrated each year, at Copy and Print Services — every workday is a green day!

“We recycle pretty much everything: cuttings from our paper and foam boards,” said Sami Snelling, production manager. “The ɫ Recycling and Solid Waste Division comes by once a week to pick up our recyclables.”

The recycling team has commented that Copy and Print is one of the biggest recyclers on campus. When the bins are full, they receive a call and arrive within an hour or so for pickup.

The print shop also does some in-house recycling of its own. When the team has leftover paper from a job, it keeps the paper on-hand for future use. If a mistake comes up on a print job, the blank side is repurposed in setting up orders.

CPS is eco-friendly in the materials it uses in production.

“The majority of the paper we stock, about 95 percent, is FSC Mix; and the inks we use are soy-based and use nonvolatile organic compounds,” said Snelling.

Paper labeled FSC Mix by the Forestry Stewardship Council consists of a combination of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled sources, and/or FSC-controlled lumber. CPS uses this paper at various thicknesses and textures for many of its projects, including for commencement books and the ɫ letterhead.

Soy-based inks are made using at least 20 percent soybean oil by volume instead of oils based on petroleum. This makes the oils nontoxic with fewer VOCs that can evaporate into the air, which allows the team to produce safer products in a healthier work environment.

“We’ve come a long way since we changed over to recycling, and a lot of our chemicals have become green,” said Snelling. “We’ll continue to strive to do our part for the betterment of our staff, our customers, and Mother Earth.”
